who served as retainers to the feudal lords. Swordsmanship,
archery, and horsemanship were their primary martial skills,
and often in Japanese history, only samurai had the right to
even possess these weapons. They
also studied literature, calligraphy, and Confucian
philosophy,
befitting their roles as administrators under the shoguns.
The training and education of a samurai was typically
provided for by his own family, and many samurai families
