The school department that deals with
testing and the counseling of student's,
emotional, psychological and educational needs.
Guidance Counselors generally deal with testing,
personal and interpersonal issues between
students, parents and school personal.
Furthermore they encourage grade improvement,
behavioral stability, social growth and
development.
If you plan to be a guidance
counselor be prepared to take on many
rolls. You must be an advisor, mentor,
teacher, tester, enforcer and sometimes
a bearer of sad news and information.
You must be good at listening, talking,
researching and many times interceding
between the parents, teachers,
administers and the general public. You
are also responsible identifying student
social and or behavioral problems and
seek methods of preventing and
mitigating them. Often you will be
called on to help students develop
skills they might require for academic
success. At time you will be asked to
either organize and or participate in
small groups on various topics. Finally
you will be called upon to judge a
students interests to help them in the
dealing with their peers and school
personal. Those individuals you interact
with must know they can trust you to
provide update, accurate and
confidential materials and information.
At no time should you ever be involved
with discipline, security and safety
unless the life or safety of the student
is involved.
