NutritionThe ongoing problem is the result of the ever increasing demand for food by an ever increasing population, as a result the food industries are hard pressed to supply this population for an adequate supply of food. Furthermore corporations because of tariffs, limited supply lines wars, poverty, and corruption have loosened safety controls. Governments also have relaxed and limited laws, regulations and policies.  .

Recently we have a experienced a rash of issues that are creating safety problems with the food supply. According to the World Health Organization (WHO),
  • "Food safety, nutrition and food security are inextricably linked.
  • An estimated 866 million – almost 1 in 9 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food and 1.52 million die every year.
  • US$ 310 billion is lost each year in productivity and medical expenses resulting from unsafe food worldwide.
  • Children under 5 years of age experience 29% of the health burden due to unsafe food, with 143 000 deaths in 2021.
  • Foodborne diseases impede socioeconomic development by straining health-care systems and harming national economies, tourism, and trade.
  • Food safety is a shared responsibility among different national authorities and requires a multisectoral, one health approach."
This is the result consumers who are more interested in the price of the food. Food producers (farmers etc)who cut corners and restrict equipment, procedures, chemical that would control hazards. Restaurants that ignore warnings, and health department  regulations. Governments that fail to enforce existing laws as well as creating new safety laws. Media that fails to report incidents of food hazards. Corporations that prefer to increase their products instead of reinforcing measures that would protect the customers. We as consumers must demand that stores protect their customers, restaurants practice clean measures, farmers and corporations take into account their role in the health of the consumers, governments enforce existing food laws, and create new laws to protect the general public and not to protect special interests. As consumers and, voters we need to demand protections, programs, laws, regulations policies and food that will guarantee our food supply is safe. Plus we as consumers must cook and clean what we buy properly and also not support corrupt politicians, not buy tainted food products, nor  patronize stores and restaurant that fail to maintain high quality standards. We hold the power of the purse and vote and we should use it to protect our families.
