Galactic Astronomy
Astronomy: The scientific study
of the Galaxies, Stars, Nebulae, Solar Systems and the
Universe. It deals with a celestial object's
relationship to the Earth, size, position, composition, motion,
evolution and energy. Astronomers use telescopes, satellites,
computers, space stations and observatories to study the universe.
Galaxy Evolution and Formation: The study of
galaxies and how they are created and change over time and space.
1. "The
Milky Way galaxy is whirling rapidly, spinning our sun and
all its other stars at around 100 million km per hour."

2. "The
Sun travels around the galaxy once every 200 million years –
a journey of 100,000 light years."Read

3. "There
may be a huge black hole in the very middle of the most of
the galaxies."

5. " The Milky Way is a disk about
120,000 light years across with a central bulge that has a
diameter of 12,000 light years" Read More Universe Today
6. "Scientists
believe that 90% of our galaxy's mass consists of dark
matter, which gives it a mysterious halo"

7. "The
word 'galaxy' is derived from the Greek word galaxias which
means "milky", it is a reference to our own galaxy the Milky
Way. Read More Science Kids.
8. "Any
galaxy that has no obvious spiral or elliptical structure
are called irregular galaxies. Some irregular galaxies would
have just formed that way while others are the result of
other galaxy types crashing into each other."

9. "Our
Milky Way Galaxy is part of a 'Local Group' of galaxies in
which the galaxies move relative to each other. The
Andromeda Galaxy is the largest galaxy of the Local Group,
followed by the Milky Way and the Triangulum Galaxy, there
are around 30 other smaller galaxies in the group"

10. "Galaxies
often collide with each other. Usually, the stars within
each will move past one and other due to the vast space
between them. Any gas clouds and dust will interact, forming
new stars. Gravity can pull the galaxies into new shapes,
two spiral galaxies might join into a new elliptical, others
produce bars, rings, or tails."
