Disciplinarian: |
Whether it is the child's
behavior at home, in the school or in
the community at large, parent's role
will involve the example they exhibit,
the rules they establish and enforce. Enforcement must be consistent, fair and equally
applied by both parents. Never should punishment be
corporal, mental or excessive. Avoid the game where the
child plays one parent on the other. |

Friend: |
Yes you should always be a
friend to your child but this should
never overshadow your role as a parent.
Children will always have friends in the
community and school but you must play a
balancing roll. Sometimes the roll of
parent must and by all rights be the
roll of friend. Let them know you will
always love them regardless of the
situation. |

As
an Education Supporter |
Sometimes the curriculum can
be overwhelming. Your role needs to be
one of support and guidance. If your
child is having homework or school
difficulty talk to him or her and
ascertain the causes and work towards
mitigating the issue (such as parental
conferences). If he or she is having
issues with homework,
don't under any circumstances do it for
them, but help them find the answers.

Financial Support: |
In all stages of your
child's life (until they become
independent) you will be their main
source of financial support. Don't overdo the allowances,
keep it reasonable and also require they
perform household duties. Encourage them
to use the money wisely on things they
need instead of things they want. Warn
them of the many scams. |
